Direct Deposit

We encourage claimants to opt for either the direct deposit or debit card payment methods that are approved by the State of Connecticut and the Labor Department.  We are not associated or affiliated with check cashing services, or any pre-paid debit card services. Click here for more information.

  • Direct Deposit is safer.
  • Direct Deposit is free. There is no fee for using the electronic transfer system.

If you do not already have a checking or savings account and need to open one to use the Direct Deposit payment method, a list of Connecticut bank and credit union locations can be found at the Department of Banking Internet site. Several Connecticut banks and credit unions may offer no-cost checking.

To sign up for Direct Deposit, you must enroll online. You CANNOT sign up for Direct Deposit by phone.  Using the Department of Labor’s secure website you must click on the SELECT/MODIFY PAYMENT METHOD option from the Unemployment Insurance Welcome Screen.  You will be required to enter your Social Security Number and your four-digit personal identification number (PIN) and then be asked to provide and verify the account number of your savings or checking account, and routing number.  For more specific information regarding Direct Deposit, click on FAQ’s.

Please note:  Call Center representatives cannot sign people up for Direct Deposit – it must be done online, using the Department of Labor’s secure website.  If no electronic payment method is actively chosen, the system will automatically default to Debit Card. You must create an account before you can select Direct Deposit as your payment option. Below are instructions on how to create an account:

Note: When creating your account, it is important that you remember the answers to your security questions.  You will not be able to retrieve your User ID or password without them.  The answers must be entered exactly as they are created including any punctuation, spacing or abbreviations you may use.  Failure to enter the answers exactly as they are created may result in the inability to retrieve your User ID or password.  Click here to access the On-Line Claim System
