What Hours Can I Work?

bullet 14 and 15 year olds
bullet Under 18 years old and in school
bullet Under 18 years old and not attending school


If you are 14 or 15 years old, you CAN'T be employed:

bullet during school hours
bullet before 7:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m., except during the summer (July 1st to Labor Day); then, you can work until 9:00 p.m.
bullet more than 3 hours per day on school days or 8 hours per day on non-school days
bullet more than 18 hours a week during school weeks or 40 hours a week during non-school weeks

If you are under 18 years old and still attending, but have not graduated, from high school (or some other secondary school) these are the hours you can work (by industry):

bullet Restaurants (during school weeks)
bullet 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. (6:00 a.m. to midnight if you're on school vacation, the day worked is not before a school day, or if you're not attending school)
bullet 6 hours per day/32 hours per week
bullet 8 hours per day on Friday, Saturday, Sunday
bullet Restaurants (during non-school weeks)
bullet 8 hours per day/48 hours per week
bullet 6 days per week
  
bullet Recreational, Amusement, and Theater (during school weeks)
bullet 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. (6:00 a.m. to midnight if you're on school vacation, the day worked is not before a school day, or if you're not attending school)
bullet 6 hours per day/32 hours per week
bullet 8 hours per day on Friday, Saturday, Sunday
bullet Recreational, Amusement, and Theater (during non-school weeks)
bullet 8 hours per day/48 hours per week
bullet 6 days per week
  
bullet Manufacturing and Mechanical  (during school weeks)
bullet 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. (6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. if you're on school vacation, the day worked is not before a school day, or if you're not attending school)
bullet 6 hours per day/32 hours per week
bullet 8 hours per day on Friday, Saturday, Sunday
bullet Manufacturing and Mechanical (during non-school weeks)
bullet 8 hours per day/48 hours per week
bullet 6 days per week
  
bullet Retail/Mercantile (during school weeks)
bullet 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. (6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. if you're on school vacation, the day worked is not before a school day, or if you're not attending school; 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight if you work in a supermarket that is 3500 square feet, and there is no school the next day)
bullet 6 hours per day/32 hours per week
bullet 8 hours per day on Friday, Saturday, Sunday
bullet Retail/Mercantile (during non-school weeks)
bullet 8 hours per day/48 hours per week
bullet 6 days per week
  
bullet Hairdressing, Bowling Alley, Pool Hall, or Photography Gallery (during school weeks)
bullet 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
bullet 6 hours per day/32 hours per week
bullet 8 hours per day on Friday, Saturday, Sunday
bullet Hairdressing, Bowling Alley, Pool Hall, or Photography Gallery (during non-school weeks)
bullet 8 hours per day/48 hours per week
bullet 6 days per week
