Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that the state’s Unemployment Insurance (UI) claims centers will remain open on Friday, December 31, to assist Connecticut job-seekers. Other state Department of Labor offices, along with most other state offices, will be closed in observance of the New Year’s holiday.

“Our first priority continues to be helping those who are dealing with the lingering effects of the terrible recession,” Governor Rell said. “There are families who count on UI as a temporary lifeline while they look for permanent employment – and their needs come first.

“We have worked hard this year to make improvements in the on-line and telephone technology used by UI filers,” the Governor said. “Once they have registered their initial claims, most people are able to use the Labor Department’s automated TeleBenefits phone system or the WebBenefits online system to file their weekly updates. However, keeping the call centers open on December 31 will be especially helpful to anyone who needs to speak with a Customer Service Representative to complete a claim.”

Call centers will remain open December 31 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All offices, including the call centers, will be closed December 24 in observance of the Christmas holiday and December 27 for the statewide unpaid furlough day, part of a budget-cutting agreement negotiated by Governor Rell with state employee unions.
