For immediate release
May 20, 2009

WETHERSFIELD,  Changes resulting from the recently-enacted Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act and the impact on employers in this state will be detailed during a June 3 workshop taking place at the CTWorks office located at 2 Lafayette Square (350 Fairfield Avenue) in Bridgeport.

The Connecticut Department of Labor, the CT Business Leadership Network, the Southwestern Connecticut Regional Workforce Development Board and Connect-ability are sponsoring the event, titled ADA Law Changes: What Every Employer Should Know. The workshop begins with  registration and refreshments at 8 a.m. and concludes at 10:30 a.m. There is no charge to attend, although registration is requested.

Melissa Marshall, J.D., Executive Director of the CT Business Leadership Network, will review the changes stemming from the new legislation, which took effect this past January. During the first portion of the program Marshall will outline and explain new employer obligations as a result of the new Act. She will be followed by CTWorks Business Services Specialists who will provide an overview of services and programs for businesses and organizations offered by the Labor Department and CTWorks partners.

The new legislation updates and supplements the Americans with Disabilities Act, which first became law in 1990, notes State Labor Commissioner Patricia H. Mayfield.

“This seminar will be especially beneficial for human resource managers and those who supervise 15 or more employees,” Mayfield noted. “This comprehensive review and update will cover topics ranging from ADA basics to strategies for compliance. We will also explore how employer obligations and how they have changed under the new law.”

Individuals wishing to attend the June 3 program can register by contacting Dolores Ryan in the Bridgeport CTWorks Business Services Unit by telephone: (203) 455-2602, email: dolores.ryan@ct.gov or fax: (203) 455-2730. Interpreters for the session will be provided upon request.
