Bed Bugs, West Nile and More are CONN-OSHA Breakfast Roundtable Subjects

For immediate release
March 14, 2008

WETHERSFIELD - A Breakfast Roundtable Discussion titled “Bed Bugs, Mosquitoes and Ticks and the Diseases They Carry in Connecticut” is scheduled for March 18 at the Connecticut Agricultural Station in Windsor.  Sponsored by the Connecticut Department of Labor’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health (CONN-OSHA), the program will run from 8:15 to 9:45 a.m. at the facility, which is located at 153 Cook Hill Road in Windsor. The 90-minute session will feature a talk by John F. Anderson Ph.D., a Distinguished Scientist with the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station.

“This month’s topic has a true Connecticut connection,” explains John Able, CONN-OSHA Safety Training Specialist, who coordinates the breakfast series. “Bed bugs have become increasingly abundant in Connecticut dwellings as of late, particularly in apartment complexes. West Nile Virus, meanwhile, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, has been quite a concern here as of late, too. It arrived in this state back in 1999, and has since spread across the country, making several thousand people ill and actually causing the deaths of a number of others. Lyme Disease, which is caused by a bacterium known as spirochete and is transmitted by white-footed mice to humans through tick bites, traces its origins to Lyme, Connecticut.”

Also continuing this month, Able notes, will be the discussion portion of the program. Time permitting, each participant will be asked to submit a question for discussion and everyone in the room will be invited to share their opinions regarding the issue.

Admission to the roundtable is free, but pre-registration is required. To register for the breakfast roundtable or for additional information, please contact Able at (860) 263-6902, or via email at
