Introduction to Employment Law Kicks Off DOL's Employer Breakfast Seminar Series

For immediate release
March 20, 2008

WETHERSFIELD – What rights does an employee have to review his or her personnel file?  Must every question posed by a potential employer during a job interview be answered?  What are rules concerning smoking in the workplace?  When using the term “meal period,” what period of time is covered?

These questions, and many others, will be addressed during an April 18 Employer Education Breakfast Seminar titled, Introduction to Employment Law, the first of a series of seminars sponsored by the Connecticut Department of Labor’s Office of Program Policy.

The 8 to 11 a.m. seminar will be held at the Connecticut Department of Labor’s Central Office, 200 Folly Brook Boulevard. Conducted by Heidi Lane and Jennifer Devine, attorneys in the Office of Program Policy and experts in the field of employment law, the morning event kicks off the agency’s 2008 Employer Education Breakfast Seminar series. Featuring a continental breakfast, the seminars also provide for a question and answer period.

“Our seminar series provides Connecticut’s business community with a better understanding of workforce issues in the areas of basic payment laws, electronic surveillance and monitoring in the workplace, the Family and Medical Leave Act, and drug testing and discrimination laws,” noted State Labor Commissioner Patricia H. Mayfield.

“Our first seminar of the series will provide an introductory overview of a wide range of employment laws affecting the Connecticut workplace and should be an excellent forum for human resources professionals, business owners and managers, attorneys, and other employers who want a basic introduction to employment laws affecting the Connecticut workplace,” Mayfield said.

The pre-registration fee, due by April 11, is $25. Pre-registration applications and checks should be sent to Kathy Marioni, Connecticut Department of Labor, 200 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield, CT 06109.  Registration forms can be obtained on the agency’s Web site at www.ct.gov/dol.

Individuals with questions can contact Kathy via email at kathleen.marioni@ct.gov or by phone at (860) 263-6755. Persons needing special accommodations are requested to contact the agency at least one week prior to the event.

In addition to Introduction to Employment Law, four other upcoming seminars include: Unemployment Insurance 101, May 9; Essentials of Connecticut Wage and Hour, May 30; Complying with Connecticut’s Drug Testing Laws, June 6; and Complying with Connecticut’s Family and Medical Leave Act, June 20. Additional information on each of the Employer Breakfast Seminars, as well as registration forms, can be obtained by visiting the Labor Department’s Web site.
