Job and Career Fair to assist returning soldiers

Governor M. Jodi Rell announced today that state and federal agencies and organizations are teaming up to help Connecticut’s veterans with their employment needs with a special Heroes4Hire job and career fair to be held July 17 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.

“With 500 of our servicemen and women recently back from overseas and another 500 expected to return soon, we must now serve those who so bravely fought for our country,” said Governor Rell. “Approximately 12 percent of our residents are veterans, and as a state, it is our responsibility to help those who are involved in this current conflict - as well as those who have served in the past. We must combine our resources to help them transition back to their families, their careers and their lives.”

The Heroes4Hire job and career fair, to take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., will feature approximately 70 companies from across the state, with hundreds of openings in the managerial, professional, sales, administrative, production and related fields.

“We are inviting all of our Connecticut veterans to stop by this free job fair in order to meet face-to-face with companies that are looking to fill job openings,” Governor Rell said. “These employers know the benefits of hiring a veteran. In addition to bringing an accelerated learning curve to the workplace, veterans understand the rigors of tight schedules and limited resources and often are current with technology.”

The event will also feature organizations that will provide information on veteran’s benefits, vocational rehabilitation services and educational and career options. Nationally Certified Professional Résumé Writers from the Connecticut Department of Labor will also be on-site to assist attendees with making sure their résumés showcase their skills to employers.

The event, being planned by the Connecticut departments of Labor and Veterans’ Affairs and the Connecticut Military Department, is the second Heroes4Hire event to be offered by the state. The first job fair, held this past January, was attended by more than 1,000 veterans who met with 80 participating companies.
