WETHERSFIELD, The weather’s turning colder, winter is on its way, and an annual tradition – the agency’s Coat and Sweater Drive – has returned for Connecticut Department of Labor employees assigned to the agency’s two Wethersfield locations.

Labor Department employees, in conjunction with the Salvation Army of Hartford, will once again be taking part in the annual drive, which will run from Nov. 6 through Dec. 13, State Labor Commissioner Patricia H. Mayfield said today.

“At the project’s end, all collected apparel will be donated to the Salvation Army of Greater Hartford and will be distributed by that organization,” she notes.

“Employees in our Central Office, located at 200 Folly Brook Boulevard, and our DOL Annex, which is located at 38 Wolcott Hill Road, will, from Nov. 6 to Dec. 13, be bringing in and donating gently-used coats and sweaters which, at the drive’s conclusion, will go to needy families and individuals living in the greater Hartford area,” Mayfield explains.

As in the past 10 year’s that the coat and sweater drive has been conducted, the effort has been organized as a competition-type event among the large collection boxes have been placed in a central spot on each the three Central Office floors, and in the annex cafeteria, as well, the Commissioner points out. The 870 Labor Department in Central Office and the DOL Annex are then bringing in no-longer used coats and sweaters they have at home -- or which have been given to them for the drive by family member and friends -- and competing with one another in a friendly contest.  According to the Commissioner, daily totals will be kept and posted.  At drive’s end, employees on the winning floor, or the victorious DOL Annex staffers, will receive the opportunity to dress down day on a date to be determined.

“We’ve been conducting our Coat and Sweater Drive in this manner for some time now and our employees are always more than happy to contribute,” Mayfield said. “It’s always rewarding to feel that we’re making a contribution and helping others.”
