Disposal of Universal Waste Products on Agenda

For immediate release
January 4, 2007

WETHERSFIELD, Hugo DelRosso, Environmental Safety and Health Manager with Northeast Lamp Recycling, Inc. in East Windsor, will be the featured speaker during a Jan. 16 breakfast meeting sponsored by the Connecticut Department of Labor’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health (CONN-OSHA).

The meeting, which focuses on the proper means of disposing of universal waste products, will be held 8:15 to 9:45 a.m. in Conference Room A of the Connecticut Department of Labor's Central Office, 200 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield.

“Batteries, mercury-containing thermostats and devices, certain pesticides, lamps and other used electronics are considered universal wastes which are hazardous and need to be disposed of in a proper and safe manner,“ said CONN-OSHA Training Officer John Able, who coordinates the breakfast roundtables.

“These types of waste products are covered by the ‘Waste Rule’ that provides a set of streamlined regulations designed to reduce the regulatory burden,” Able explained. “The regulations allow longer time for the storage of these types of wastes, establish reduced record-keeping requirements and address the consolidation of off-site storage.”

Also continuing this month, time permitting, Able said, will be the discussion portion of the program. Each attendee has an opportunity to submit a question for discussion and everyone will be invited to share their opinion regarding the issue.

Admission to the roundtable is free, but pre-registration is required. To register for the breakfast roundtable or for additional information, please contact John Able at (860) 263-6902, or via email at
